Log #2: She Was Horrid

Green is my favorite color. It has also become, recently, a bane on my existence as I prepare to bring the Found Oracles digital publication to a physical, printed format you can flip through in-person and hold in your hands.

The problem is that the neon acid green that looks so good on the screen turns to baby poop when prepped to be printed on paper. It was the problem with the limited edition mini deck I offered this spring, and it’s a problem in general for all of the printed fun we still want to have with the oracle stories.

The only small solace is that it’s not just me who faces this. It’s a notorious problem in the publishing world for anyone taking a digital project of any kind into a print format. Especially with greens.

This makes it no less infuriating. 

My home printer gets me. It prints the green beautifully, natively, intuitively. But make the move to a commercial printer who has to have it as a CMYK file and CMY ICKY is more like it. That’s the name of the computer folder I save all of my CMYK files to, by the way: CMYICKY.

I’ll get us our gorgeous green ink, though. My home printer proves it is possible and when a home printer does something right, by golly you believe it.

In a way, the color green reminds me of one of my favorite Longfellow nursery rhymes, which in turn has always reminded me of myself a bit:

There was a little girl

Who had a little curl

Right in the middle of her forehead

And when she was good, 

she was very good indeed

But when she was bad,

she was horrid
